A Tasty Kidnapping

by Mary O'Bryan on September 15, 2011

My in-laws live a mile from our home. I told my mother-in-law that in 24 hours I was kidnapping her and it was a surprise as to where we were going and what we would be doing. “Pack a suitcase with your toothbrush, nightgown, robe, and slippers. Be ready to leave by 2pm the next day”.

When I arrive, she had not packed, but she wanted to go and was very excited about the surprise. She has Alzeimer’s and short term memory loss so I wasn’t really expecting her to remember. I gathered her things and put them in the suitcase. We said good bye to my father-in-law (who is 90) and off we went.

As we pulled out of the driveway she asked where we were going. In jest, I said “Mexico!” “Yipee!” was her reaction. That one word describes her in a nutshell. She is FUN! We were not going to Mexico but to a bakery outside of the city to get wedding samples that we were then going to take to Bride and Groom in their city.

Five hours later we arrived at Bride’s apartment with the baked goods in hand. Wedding cake samples, cookies samples, brownie samples,…all from the supposed TOP bakery for TOP weddings.

Groom brought ice for cocktails. We spent the evening laughing, listening to wedding music choices, and tasting desserts. Bride gave up her bed for her Grandmama and I slept on the couch.

It was a wonderful memory for all of us. We didn’t hire the bakery.
